Quick remedy for cracked heels: what to know

Heel fissures develop when dry, thickened skin loses flexibility and splits under pressure. Open-backed footwear, prolonged standing, friction, and dry conditions can make the split deeper. Athlete's foot may contribute when there is scaling, peeling, or itching between the toes or along the soles. Cracked skin is not always simple dryness, particularly when there is inflammation or repeated recurrence.

After washing, pat the feet dry and apply a thick emollient while the skin is still slightly damp. At night, cover the moisturised heels with clean cotton socks. A brief soak followed by gentle use of a foot file can reduce surface thickening; do not cut the skin or file until it is sore. Choose supportive, closed footwear and avoid walking barefoot while the fissures are open.

Arrange medical advice for deep, bleeding, painful, or repeatedly reopening cracks. Seek prompt care if redness spreads, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or increasing tenderness develops. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, or circulation problems should have foot cracks assessed early because small breaks in the skin can become more difficult to manage.
