What should you know about quadra PET scan?

A quadra PET scan combines a metabolic PET image with CT detail to help locate and assess active tissue. A small amount of FDG radiotracer is given, and the scanner detects how tissues handle it. The CT part adds an anatomical map so the care team can compare activity with organs and other structures.

The scan may help a team investigate a suspected tumour, look for disease in more than one area, or clarify findings from another test. Increased tracer activity is not a diagnosis by itself: infection, inflammation, healing, and some normal tissues can also appear active. The images are interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, blood tests, and tissue results when available.

You may hear the terms PET-CT scan, FDG scan, or whole-body PET-CT. The exact field of view depends on the clinical question. PET-CT can be useful when assessing conditions such as lymphoma or cancer of unknown primary.

The imaging centre will give instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and diabetes care. Tell the team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have difficulty lying still. After the tracer is injected, you usually rest quietly while it distributes, then lie on the scanner table while images are taken. The scan itself is not generally painful, although the injection and staying still may be uncomfortable.

Bring a list of medicines and relevant reports. Follow the centre's instructions rather than changing diabetes medicine on your own. Afterward, ask when you may resume normal activities and whether you should limit close contact briefly with particular people.

Contact the imaging centre promptly if you develop a spreading rash, swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or severe discomfort after the injection. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or collapse. If you feel unwell after leaving, explain that you recently received a radiotracer and follow the centre's emergency instructions.

Ask what clinical question the scan is meant to answer, which areas will be imaged, and whether you need to change food, fluids, or medicines beforehand. You can also ask when the report will be available, whether further imaging or a biopsy may be needed, and how the result fits with your other findings.
