Can you get pregnant with hyperthyroidism?

An overactive thyroid can affect menstrual cycles, ovulation, and general wellbeing, although the effect differs from person to person. Pregnancy can also change how thyroid disease is monitored and treated.

Untreated or poorly controlled hyperthyroidism during pregnancy may place extra strain on the pregnant person and can affect the developing baby. The concerns depend on the cause of the condition, thyroid hormone results, symptoms, and medicines being used.

Symptoms such as palpitations, excessive sweating, heat intolerance, diarrhoea, difficulty sleeping, feeling anxious, or night sweats can occur with an overactive thyroid. These symptoms do not by themselves show whether pregnancy is safe; blood tests and a clinical review are needed.

Arrange a pre-pregnancy appointment with an endocrinologist or obstetric clinician. They can check thyroid blood tests, review the reason for the hyperthyroidism, and agree on monitoring during pregnancy.

Do not stop, start, or change thyroid medicine without medical advice. Some treatments are unsuitable during pregnancy, and the safest choice can vary by stage of pregnancy. Radioactive iodine treatment is not used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so discuss treatment timing before conception.

If you think you may be pregnant, contact your treating clinician promptly so medicines and blood-test timing can be reviewed. Keep a record of your symptoms and current doses, and attend scheduled thyroid checks.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, confusion, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, high fever, or repeated vomiting. These symptoms need prompt assessment whether or not you are pregnant.

During pregnancy, contact your maternity or thyroid team promptly if symptoms suddenly worsen, you cannot keep medicine down, or you have concerns after missing doses. Bring your medicine packaging or a current medication list if you attend urgent care.

Ask which thyroid results should be reached before conception, how often testing will be needed, which medicine is planned for each stage, and what symptoms should trigger an urgent call. Also ask whether your partner or family history changes the evaluation of the thyroid condition.
