What should you know about purple spots on arms?

Check whether each spot is centred on a hair follicle, has a whitehead, feels rough, itches, hurts, or fades when pressed. Folliculitis can produce small inflamed bumps around hairs, while acne and hormonal acne can cause tender blocked pores. Shaving or friction may contribute to razor bumps. A rash around the mouth is a different pattern from spots scattered over the arms, and rosacea usually affects facial skin. Purple colour may also remain after an inflamed spot settles. A flat mark that does not blanch, especially with easy bruising or bleeding elsewhere, needs medical assessment rather than acne treatment.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid picking, and pause abrasive scrubs or fragranced products on the area. Wear loose sleeves if fabric is rubbing the spots, and use clean shaving tools if shaving is part of the pattern. Photograph the area and note new medicines, supplements, workouts, heat, or hair-removal products. Do not squeeze bumps or start several active treatments at once; doing so can increase irritation and make the original pattern harder to judge. A clinician can distinguish pimples from follicle inflammation, pigment change, or spots beneath the skin.

Get urgent help for rapidly spreading spots with fever, marked swelling, severe pain, facial swelling, breathing trouble, or a very unwell feeling. Arrange prompt review if spots are flat and non-blanching, follow an injury, or appear with unusual bruising or bleeding. Book a routine visit when the spots persist, recur, scar, drain, or do not settle after removing an obvious irritant.
