What should you know before purchasing an ECG machine?

An ECG machine records electrical signals from the heart through electrodes placed on the skin. The tracing can help a trained clinician assess rhythm and other electrical patterns, but it is a test rather than a diagnosis by itself. A clear recording, correct electrode placement, suitable patient preparation, and clinical context all affect how useful the result is.

Define whether the machine is for clinic assessment, monitoring, education, or another setting. Check that it supports the leads and recording format your service uses, produces readable tracings, stores or exports results securely, and has instructions suitable for staff. Confirm electrical safety, cleaning requirements, consumables, software support, calibration, warranty service, and a plan for qualified interpretation. A device should fit the workflow, not replace clinical judgement.

Do not use a home or clinic ECG to delay urgent care for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, or a sustained rapid or irregular heartbeat. Call emergency services for severe or sudden symptoms. An ECG result that looks unusual, or a recording that cannot be interpreted, needs review by a qualified clinician rather than reassurance from the device alone.

Ask which ECG features are needed for your setting, who will interpret recordings, how staff will be trained, how data will be protected, and what support is available if electrodes or software produce an unreliable trace.
