What should you know about rabies in puppies?

Rabies affects the nervous system of mammals and spreads through infected saliva. Puppy behaviour can change with fear, pain, illness, or normal development, so unusual behaviour is not a diagnosis. Conversely, normal behaviour cannot exclude infection. Exposure details and reliable vaccination or observation information are more useful than guessing from appearance.

After a bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin, wash the area with soap and running water. Avoid touching saliva with bare hands. Contact a healthcare service urgently and report the animal to the appropriate local authority so it can be assessed safely. Note the puppy’s owner, location, vaccination information, and the exact type of contact.

Arrange urgent assessment after any possible exposure, particularly if the puppy is stray, cannot be located, has signs of illness, or was involved in an unprovoked attack. Emergency wound care is needed for severe bleeding, tissue damage, or bites involving the face, eyes, or hands. Do not wait for symptoms in the exposed person.
