Pulmonary hypertension: what to know

The lung arteries carry blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs. When these vessels become narrowed, stiff, blocked, or affected by another illness, the heart must pump against greater resistance. Breathlessness during activity, tiredness, dizziness, chest pressure, a fast heartbeat, and swollen ankles can occur. Causes and forms vary; heart failure, chronic lung disease, sleep apnoea, and other conditions may be relevant. The name is different from ordinary hypertension, which affects arteries throughout the body.

Arrange a medical assessment for breathlessness that is new, worsening, or limiting normal activity. A clinician may review your history, oxygen level, heart and lungs, then arrange tests such as an electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, chest imaging, or breathing tests. Treatment depends on the cause and may include managing an underlying heart, lung, or sleep condition. Take prescribed medicines consistently and discuss exercise, travel, and pregnancy planning with your specialist.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, fainting, new chest pain, blue-grey lips, confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling. Do not wait for a routine appointment if symptoms suddenly change. A new episode of marked palpitations with dizziness also needs prompt assessment because an abnormal rhythm can reduce effective heart pumping.
