Short answer

A pulled hamstring muscle is an overstretched or torn muscle at the back of the thigh that needs graded recovery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a pulled hamstring means

The hamstrings help bend the knee and move the hip. A sudden sprint, jump, slip or forceful stretch can overload these muscles. Pain may appear immediately, with tenderness, swelling, bruising or weakness. Walking can feel uncomfortable, and a more substantial injury may make it difficult to push off or bend the knee.

The phrase pulled hamstring can describe a range of injuries. An examination considers where the pain is, how the injury happened and whether strength or movement is reduced. Thigh pain can have other causes too, so persistent or unclear symptoms deserve an assessment.

What you can do

Stop the activity that caused pain and protect the leg from movements that increase it. In the early phase, brief periods of comfortable rest, a cold pack wrapped in cloth and gentle compression may help symptoms. Avoid forceful stretching, massage and heat while swelling or bruising is increasing.

As walking becomes easier, gradual movement and strengthening help restore control. A physiotherapist can tailor exercise therapy to your injury and build toward running. Sports physiotherapy or a return-to-sport programme can help test strength, speed and change of direction before full activity. PRP injection may be discussed for selected injuries, but it is not suitable for everyone.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical assessment if you felt a pop, cannot walk normally, have marked weakness, rapidly increasing swelling or extensive bruising. Seek urgent care for a cold or pale foot, numbness, severe worsening pain or an obvious change in the shape of the thigh. If symptoms are not steadily improving, an examination can check for a larger tear or another source of pain.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which hamstring structure is affected, what activity is safe now, when strengthening should begin, and which signs mean you should return sooner. Ask how progress will be judged before running or sport.

Questions people ask

Should you stretch a pulled hamstring?

Avoid forceful stretching while pain or swelling is active. Gentle, guided movement can be introduced as symptoms settle.

Can you walk with a pulled hamstring?

Some people can walk with a mild injury, but a limp, severe pain or inability to bear weight needs assessment.
