Pulled hamstring in the leg: symptoms and care

Short answer
A pulled hamstring in the leg can cause sudden back-thigh pain, tenderness, bruising, and weakness when bending the knee or extending the hip.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The hamstring’s role
The hamstring group crosses the back of the thigh from the pelvis toward the knee. It controls hip and knee movement, especially during running, climbing, and rising from a chair. A strain can be an overstretch or a partial tear. Symptoms may stay in one spot or travel along the back of the thigh. Pain with sitting can point toward an upper hamstring attachment, while pain near the knee may need a different examination. Thigh pain is not always muscular, particularly when there is no clear movement-related trigger.
What you can do
Stop the activity that caused the pain and avoid sprinting, jumping, and forceful stretching. Walk with a shorter stride if that is comfortable; do not push through a limp. A wrapped cold pack may help early discomfort. When daily movement settles, Exercise Therapy can progress from gentle activation to strengthening and controlled lengthening. Sports Physiotherapy can tailor the plan for running, football, racket sports, or other activities. A Return-to-Sport Programme helps check readiness through staged drills rather than a single test.
When to seek care
Have the injury assessed if you felt a pop, develop significant bruising or swelling, cannot walk normally, or notice a clear loss of strength. Prompt care is needed for pain close to the sitting bone, a visible dip in the muscle, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent help for inability to bear weight, numbness, or a cold, pale foot.
Questions for an appointment
Ask which part of the hamstring is affected, whether the tendon may be involved, and how much walking or exercise is appropriate. Confirm the warning signs, the next strengthening step, and the activities that should wait until control and strength have returned.

Questions people ask
Can a pulled hamstring cause bruising?
Yes. Bruising can develop after muscle or small blood-vessel damage, and its extent can help a clinician judge the injury.
Why does the leg feel weak after a hamstring strain?
Pain and muscle damage can reduce force production, so the knee and hip may feel less secure during movement.
