What should you know about puffiness under bottom lip?

It can feel like a small lump, a soft fullness or tight skin. Check whether the change is inside the mouth or only on the skin, and whether it is itchy, tender, warm or linked with a recent product or procedure.

A spot, shaving irritation, lip-balm reaction or minor bite can produce local swelling. Tooth or gum infection may cause pain, tenderness, bad taste or swelling near the jaw. Hives may bring itchy raised areas, while Angioedema can cause deeper swelling around the lips. Cellulitis is more concerning when skin becomes hot, painful and red, particularly with fever. Location alone cannot establish the cause.

Stop any new lip, dental or cosmetic product and rinse gently if an irritant may be present. Use a cool compress on the outside for short periods and avoid picking, squeezing or repeatedly pressing the area. Choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Arrange dental advice for tooth or gum symptoms, and keep a note of recent foods, medicines, stings and treatments.

Seek emergency help if swelling spreads to the tongue or throat, or if you have trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking, feel faint, or develop widespread allergic symptoms. Get same-day medical or dental assessment for fever, pus, severe tooth pain, rapidly spreading redness, marked tenderness or swelling near the eye. Review is also sensible when the lump persists or repeatedly returns.

Ask whether the swelling appears skin-related, dental or allergic, and whether you need an oral examination. Mention its exact onset, any change in size, mouth ulcers, tooth sensitivity, new products, medicines, injections or cosmetic treatments, and whether cool compresses alter the discomfort.
