What should you know about pubic skin tag?

Skin tags are soft, non-cancerous growths that may catch on underwear, become irritated by rubbing, or bleed after accidental twisting. A pubic bump is not automatically a skin tag: genital warts, moles, cysts, and other lesions can resemble one. A change in colour, surface, shape, attachment, or speed of growth makes an examination especially useful. Do not rely on a photograph or a home diagnosis for a new genital growth.

Arrange a routine dermatology or primary-care examination if the growth is new, changing, repeatedly irritated, or uncertain. Keep the area clean and dry, reduce rubbing with comfortable clothing, and avoid cutting, tying, freezing, or applying acids at home. If removal is wanted because of snagging or discomfort, a clinician may discuss skin tag removal, cryotherapy, or electrosurgery. The method depends on the lesion's appearance, attachment, location, and your skin-healing history.

Seek prompt assessment for persistent bleeding, ulceration, marked pain, rapid enlargement, a firm fixed lump, or a lesion with striking colour change. Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, or signs of infection such as spreading redness, warmth, pus, or fever. A lesion that looks wart-like also deserves a clinical diagnosis before treatment.
