Pubic Keloid: What to Know
Updated

Short answer
A pubic keloid is an overgrown scar that extends beyond an injury, and treatment aims to soften, flatten, or reduce symptoms safely.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical origin
- A scar response after skin injury or inflammation.
- Common sensations
- Itching, tenderness, or tightness.
Recognising a keloid
A keloid can follow shaving-related trauma, an ingrown hair, acne, piercing, or another break in the skin. It is often firm, smooth, and raised, and may itch, feel tender, or gradually enlarge beyond the original mark. Not every pubic lump is a keloid: Skin Lumps may represent cysts, inflamed follicles, or other conditions. A clinician may need to examine the texture, borders, colour, and history before naming it.
Management options
Avoid picking, cutting, piercing, or repeatedly shaving over the area. Reduce rubbing from clothing and keep any surrounding skin clean. A dermatologist may discuss Steroid Injection Into The Skin to soften a raised scar, laser approaches such as Fractional Laser Treatment or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment, or freezing with Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal). Surgical Excision or Keloid Removal Surgery may be considered in selected cases, often with a plan to reduce the chance of the scar returning.
When to arrange assessment
Book an appointment for a new, enlarging, painful, bleeding, ulcerated, or persistently itchy lump. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, drainage, fever, or sudden severe pain. Assessment is especially useful before any procedure, because treating an assumed keloid without confirming the diagnosis can delay care for another lesion.
Questions to bring
What features make this a keloid rather than another lump? Could an old ingrown hair or acne mark have started it? Which treatment fits its size and location? What care is needed after treatment?

Questions people ask
Should I remove a pubic keloid myself?
No. Cutting, piercing, or squeezing it can worsen scarring and introduce infection.
Can a keloid be treated with one procedure?
Treatment is individual, and a dermatologist may combine approaches or monitor the scar over time.
