Pterygoid Hamulus Bursitis

The pterygoid hamulus is a small bony projection behind the upper jaw. A tendon passes around it, and irritation in the nearby bursa can make pain feel deep in the back of the mouth, soft palate or throat. Swallowing, speaking, yawning or pressing the area may reproduce symptoms. Because dental, throat, jaw-joint and nerve conditions can feel similar, the location alone cannot confirm bursitis. A clinician may examine the mouth and throat and ask about triggers, recent dental work, trauma and changes in eating or speech.

Reduce activities that repeatedly rub or strain the painful area while arranging an assessment. Treatment is directed at the cause and may include Anti-Inflammatory Medication when suitable, local care, or a carefully considered Cortisone Injection. Joint Aspiration is not automatically appropriate because the painful structure is small and its diagnosis must be established first. Do not place objects against the sore area or self-medicate without checking safety, especially with stomach, kidney, bleeding or pregnancy concerns.

Arrange medical or dental review for persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, pain that limits eating, or a tender lump or swelling. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, pus, facial swelling or sudden severe pain. Joint Swelling elsewhere does not establish this diagnosis, so symptoms that spread or change should be reassessed.
