What should you know about PTB bronchiectasis?

Damaged airway walls do not clear mucus as effectively. Mucus may become thick or difficult to bring up, allowing germs to remain in the airways. People may have a long-lasting Cough, daily sputum, breathlessness, wheeze or tiredness. The condition can follow earlier infections, immune problems or other lung conditions, but its cause is not always found.

Bronchiectasis can vary from mild to more troublesome. A flare may bring more coughing, a change in sputum colour or amount, fever, chest discomfort or worsening breathlessness. A clinician considers your pattern rather than treating a single symptom as proof of one diagnosis.

Keep appointments for lung review and ask to learn an airway-clearance technique suited to you. Hydration, movement within your ability and a written flare plan may help you manage mucus. Do not start leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on examination and sometimes a sputum sample. Assessment may include a Chest X-Ray and breathing tests such as Spirometry, while other imaging can be considered when needed.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, fainting, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. Contact your clinician promptly when sputum changes markedly, fever develops or your usual breathing becomes worse, because an infection may need assessment.
