Psoriasis treatment: what to know

A clinician considers the body sites involved, plaque thickness, itch or pain, nail or joint symptoms, previous treatments, other conditions and medicines. Moisturisers support the skin barrier, while prescribed topical medicines can calm inflammation or reduce scale. Light-based treatment may suit selected widespread disease. Tablets or injections can be considered when symptoms are extensive, difficult to control or affecting daily life. Treatment often manages flares and reduces their return rather than changing the condition overnight.

Use each product exactly as directed, including where it belongs and how long it should remain on the skin or scalp. Apply moisturiser regularly and allow prescribed treatments to reach the affected skin rather than only the loose scale. Keep follow-up appointments so response and side effects can be reviewed. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, infections, liver or kidney problems, and all medicines or supplements before systemic treatment. Avoid sharing prescribed products.

Contact your clinician if treatment causes severe burning, swelling, blistering, marked skin thinning, new infection signs or an unexpected change. Seek prompt care for fever with widespread red or tender skin, rapidly spreading blisters, or severe joint swelling. If treatment is not helping after the agreed review period, a change in the plan may be needed rather than repeated self-treatment.
