Skin care for psoriasis

Short answer
Good psoriasis skin care means protecting the skin barrier, moisturising often, avoiding trauma, and following an individual treatment plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cleanse
- Choose lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser.
- Moisturise
- Apply a thick product soon after washing.
- Handle gently
- Do not scrub, pick, or pull off scale.
Why the skin barrier needs support
Psoriasis plaques can be dry, thick, inflamed, or sensitive to rubbing. Cleansers, hot water, fragrance, and scratching may strip or irritate the surface, while cracks can make daily activities uncomfortable. Look out for [Dry Skin](/symptoms/dry-skin/) and [Skin Cracking](/symptoms/skin-cracking/), but remember that these symptoms can occur with conditions other than psoriasis.
Build a gentle routine
Keep showers brief and lukewarm, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser only where needed, and pat the skin dry. Apply a thick cream or ointment while the skin is slightly damp, then reapply when tightness returns. Wear breathable fabrics and protect plaques from rubbing. Do not use abrasive scrubs, peel scale forcefully, or apply steroid products to sensitive areas unless a clinician has explained how. Moisturiser can support prescribed treatment, but it does not replace it.
When care should be reviewed
Arrange a review if your routine is not easing discomfort, plaques repeatedly crack, or treatment is difficult to apply. Get prompt help for warmth, pus, rapidly worsening redness, fever, severe pain, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. New nail changes or persistent joint swelling should also be discussed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ingredients to avoid, whether cream or ointment is better for your plaques, how to layer moisturiser with medicine, and which areas need special precautions.

Questions people ask
What moisturiser is suitable for psoriasis?
A fragrance-free cream or ointment is often less irritating; your clinician can advise on ingredients and texture.
Should I exfoliate psoriasis plaques?
Avoid abrasive exfoliation and forceful scale removal, which can injure already inflamed skin.
