Psoriasis on the skin

Plaques often have a distinct edge and may be thicker than surrounding skin. They can occur on elbows, knees, the scalp, lower back, or other areas, and may feel sore as well as itchy. A diagnosis considers the pattern, duration, symptoms, and medicines or illnesses that may affect the skin.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat rather than rub, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly. Keep the skin protected from friction and avoid picking at scale. Use prescribed treatment exactly as directed, including where and how often to apply it. Tell your clinician about nail changes, scalp symptoms, or morning joint stiffness because psoriasis can affect more than visible skin.

Book an appointment when a new rash persists, spreads, cracks, or disrupts sleep. Seek prompt care for widespread intense redness, severe pain, fever, pus, or blistering. A sudden change after a new medicine needs timely medical advice.
