Psoriasis on the head: treatment and cure questions

Head psoriasis usually refers to scalp involvement, sometimes reaching the hairline, ears or neck. Treatment aims to soften scale, calm inflammation and reduce itching so the scalp can heal. The right option depends on plaque thickness, affected areas, previous treatments, other health conditions and whether joints or nails are involved. A scalp rash is not automatically psoriasis: dandruff-related inflammation, eczema, infection and product reactions can appear similar. Diagnosis matters because treatments for these problems differ. Psoriasis is not contagious, and improvement does not mean the tendency to flare has disappeared.

Arrange an examination if the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms keep returning. A clinician may recommend a scalp lotion, solution, foam, shampoo or another medicine, with instructions about where and how long to apply it. Follow those directions and avoid layering multiple medicated products unless advised. Loosen scale gradually rather than picking it off, wash gently and protect the scalp from unnecessary chemical irritation. Track itch, scale, bleeding, hair changes and triggers; this helps the clinician adjust the plan. If topical care is insufficient, ask whether other treatments are appropriate for the extent and location of your psoriasis.

Book a review when scalp symptoms interfere with sleep, work, grooming or daily comfort, or when plaques extend beyond the hairline. Seek prompt medical attention for pus, marked warmth, rapidly increasing pain, fever or widespread redness. Sudden patchy hair loss, painful broken skin and new joint swelling also need assessment. These signs may reflect infection, injury or another condition rather than a routine flare.
