Psoriasis on the face

Patches may affect the eyebrows, hairline, forehead, cheeks, nose folds, or ears. They can itch, burn, feel tight, or become tender. On lighter skin, inflammation may look pink or red; on brown or dark skin, it may look violet, purple, grey, or darker than nearby skin. Flaking near the hairline can overlap with scalp psoriasis. Other rashes can look similar, so examination helps clarify the cause.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free product, then pat dry and moisturise. Avoid scrubs, picking, fragranced cosmetics, and products that sting. Do not use a strong steroid or body treatment on the face unless a clinician advises it, especially near the eyes. Mention eye symptoms and products used around the eyelids. Arrange review for a new, persistent, spreading, or recurrent facial patch. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, pus, fever, rapidly worsening pain, or extensive blistering or peeling. Joint pain, nail changes, or widespread involvement should also be discussed.

Ask which facial treatment is appropriate, how close it may be used to the eyes, which cosmetics or hair products to pause, and how to distinguish active psoriasis from a lingering colour change.
