Psoriasis nail discoloration: what to know

A nail affected by psoriasis may develop yellow-brown or reddish areas, tiny pits, grooves, thickening or crumbly material beneath the nail. One or several fingernails or toenails may change. The colour often comes from changes in the nail plate or the tissue beneath it, rather than from dirt. Nail psoriasis can occur with skin plaques, but nail changes may also be the most noticeable sign.

Keep nails trimmed and clean, and file rough edges rather than pulling at them. Wear gloves for wet work and use roomy footwear if a toenail is involved. Avoid biting, scraping, harsh solvents and cosmetic products that irritate the surrounding skin.
