Psoriasis fingernail pitting: what it means and what to do

Pitting may affect one nail or several and can appear alongside roughness, colour change, separation from the nail bed, or material collecting beneath the nail. It is a nail sign associated with psoriasis, but other nail conditions can also cause dents, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Skin plaques, scalp symptoms, or a history of psoriasis can help a clinician interpret the finding. Nail involvement may be uncomfortable when the nail catches on clothing or tools, even when the surrounding skin is quiet.

Keep nails trimmed and file sharp edges rather than pulling at them. Avoid biting, aggressive cuticle work, artificial nails, and repeated trauma, since injury can worsen inflammation. A dermatologist may examine the nail and prescribe treatment directed at the nail or broader psoriasis; improvement usually follows the nail’s slow growth, so treatment needs patience and regular use.

Arrange an assessment if new pitting persists, several nails change, or the nail becomes painful, thickened, detached, or discoloured. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or severe pain around a nail, which can signal infection.
