Psoriasis affecting the feet and nails

The soles may develop well-defined plaques with dry scale or painful fissures, particularly where walking creates pressure. Psoriasis can also affect the spaces between toes, although moisture and infection can produce similar changes. Toenails may become ridged, pitted, discoloured, thick, loose, or fragile. Foot psoriasis and fungal infection can coexist, so a clinician may examine the skin and nail and arrange testing when the appearance is uncertain.

Wash feet gently, dry carefully between the toes, and moisturise thick or cracked areas while avoiding excess product between toes. Keep toenails short and file edges without digging underneath. Choose breathable socks and shoes with enough room for the toes; reduce rubbing and pressure on tender plaques. Do not peel scale, apply irritating home remedies, or share nail tools. Use prescribed treatment consistently and mention any pain that changes your walking.

Arrange an examination for deep or recurring cracks, bleeding, persistent nail lifting, or symptoms that make standing or walking difficult. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or severe pain, especially if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, or poor circulation. Medical review can separate psoriasis from infection and address both when needed.
