How psoriasis can affect the nails

The nail matrix makes the nail plate, so inflammation there can create small depressions, grooves, or rough growth. Inflammation under the plate can make it look yellowish or brownish, thicker, or lifted from the nail bed. Nail psoriasis may occur with skin plaques, but nail changes can also appear when skin symptoms are subtle. Fungal infection, repeated injury, and other nail disorders can look alike, and more than one problem can occur together.

Keep nails trimmed short with clean tools and file rough edges carefully. Avoid biting, pushing back cuticles, scraping beneath the nail, or using artificial nails if they trap moisture or cause trauma. Wear gloves for wet work and choose comfortable footwear that does not press on toenails. Moisturise the hands, feet, and surrounding skin. A clinician may prescribe treatment applied to the nail or nearby skin; improvement is slow because damaged nail must grow out.

Book an assessment for a new, persistent, painful, or worsening nail change, especially if the nail is lifting, crumbling, or limiting walking or hand use. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, warmth, severe tenderness, or a dark mark that changes. Examination or testing may be needed before choosing psoriasis treatment.
