Psoriasis around the eyes: what to know

Psoriasis around the eyes may cause red or darker patches, dryness, fine scale, itching, burning, or cracks at the eyelid edge. It can affect the upper or lower lid, the skin between the brow and eye, or the area beside the eye. Eczema, contact dermatitis, blepharitis, and infection can appear similar. Rubbing can worsen irritation and may transfer germs to the eye. The location matters: treatment that is reasonable on thicker body skin may be too strong for eyelids.

Clean gently with lukewarm water and a non-perfumed product recommended for the face. Pat dry; do not scrub scale or use home acids, essential oils, or steroid creams borrowed from another person. Apply only the product and amount advised for the eyelid area, keeping it out of the eye and off the lash line unless specifically instructed. Pause eye makeup and fragranced cosmetics while the skin is irritated. Cool compresses may soothe discomfort, but do not place ice directly on the skin.

Seek urgent medical assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, pus, or difficulty opening the eye. Arrange a clinician review for persistent redness, recurrent flaking, or symptoms that do not settle with gentle care. A dermatologist or eye professional can check whether the eyelid, lashes, or eye surface is involved and choose a safer treatment.
