What should you know about pseudomonas conjunctivitis?

Pseudomonas conjunctivitis is a bacterial infection of the eye surface that needs prompt medical assessment and targeted treatment. It can cause redness, watering, discharge, irritation and swollen eyelids. Contact lens wear, eye injury or exposure to contaminated water can increase concern for a more serious eye infection, so do not rely on leftover drops or someone else’s medicine.

Pseudomonas is a type of bacteria. When it affects the conjunctiva, the thin tissue over the white of the eye and inner eyelid, inflammation may produce sticky eye discharge and a gritty feeling. The infection can resemble other forms of conjunctivitis, so an examination helps distinguish it from viral irritation or a corneal problem. Pain, blurred vision or marked light sensitivity deserve particular attention because they can indicate involvement beyond the conjunctiva.

Arrange a GP or eye-care assessment promptly, especially if you wear contact lenses. Stop wearing lenses and discard the current lens case until a clinician advises otherwise. Wash hands before and after touching the eye, avoid sharing towels, and gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh cloth. Use antibiotic treatment only when prescribed; the choice depends on examination findings and sometimes a sample. Follow the full directions and do not use steroid eye drops unless an eye specialist has advised them.

Seek urgent medical care for worsening or severe eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, strong light sensitivity, a cloudy-looking cornea, rapidly increasing swelling, or difficulty opening the eye. Urgent assessment is also needed after an eye injury or chemical exposure. These features can signal corneal infection, which requires different and faster management than simple conjunctivitis.
