What should you know about pseudomembranous conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis inflames the thin covering over the white of the eye and inner eyelids. In a pseudomembranous form, inflammatory material can create a pale, sheet-like layer that may stick to the conjunctiva. The eye may be red, swollen, sore, watery, or produce Eye Discharge. Causes can include infection or substantial inflammation, and the appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

A true membrane can be more firmly attached and may bleed if pulled. That is why it should not be scraped away at home. Light Sensitivity, reduced vision, or significant pain can indicate deeper eye involvement rather than simple conjunctivitis.

Arrange a GP Consultation or eye assessment, especially if a membrane is visible, symptoms are marked, or one eye is much worse. Wash hands before and after touching the face, avoid rubbing the eye, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Clean discharge gently with clean water and a fresh pad each time.

Use only drops recommended for you. Antibiotic Treatment may be appropriate for selected bacterial infections, but antibiotics do not treat every cause. Do not use someone else’s drops or leftover steroid drops.

Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, marked Light Sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, injury, a chemical splash, or swelling that prevents the eye opening. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are rapidly worsening, the cornea looks cloudy, or a contact-lens wearer develops a painful Red Eye. These features need assessment beyond routine conjunctivitis care.

Ask what may have caused the membrane, whether it should be removed by a professional, whether a swab or eye examination is needed, and how to reduce spread. Ask which warning signs mean you should return urgently and whether Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate.
