Pseudogout symptoms: signs of a crystal flare

How the structures involved in Pseudogout differ from normal

Short answer

Pseudogout commonly presents as sudden joint pain, swelling, warmth, and stiffness, often affecting one joint at a time.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Sudden pain, warmth, swelling, and stiffness
Often affected
Knee, wrist, ankle, shoulder, or elbow
Important caution
Infection can resemble a crystal flare

How symptoms can feel

A pseudogout flare occurs when calcium pyrophosphate crystals irritate the lining of a joint. The joint may become visibly swollen, tender, warm, and difficult to move. Pain can be intense and may develop over a short period. The knee is a frequent site, although the wrist, ankle, shoulder, elbow, or other joints can also be involved.

Some people have milder, longer-lasting stiffness rather than a dramatic flare. Symptoms overlap with gout, infection, an injury, and other forms of arthritis, so a symptom pattern alone cannot confirm the cause. Joint swelling is a useful description to share with a clinician, not a diagnosis by itself.

What to do during symptoms

Protect and rest the painful joint, avoid strenuous loading, and use a wrapped cool pack for brief periods if it eases discomfort. Note the start time, affected joint, fever or chills, and any recent injury or illness. A clinician may examine you and test joint fluid through aspiration when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Once infection and other causes have been considered, treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication or a cortisone injection. The safest choice depends on your medical history, kidney function, stomach health, and current medicines.

When to seek care

Get urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, severe unwellness, rapidly increasing pain, or inability to use the limb. These features can signal infection or another problem requiring prompt attention. Seek a routine assessment for a first episode, recurring attacks, or swelling that does not improve.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be pseudogout or another cause of acute swelling? Should the joint fluid be tested? Which treatments fit my medical conditions? What symptoms should prompt urgent review if this happens again?

Questions people ask

Is every hot swollen joint pseudogout?

No. Infection, gout, injury, and other arthritis can cause similar symptoms, so urgent assessment may be needed.

Can pseudogout affect more than one joint?

Yes, although an attack often centres on one joint; the pattern can vary between people and episodes.
