Pseudogout risk factors: what can raise your risk

How the structures involved in Pseudogout differ from normal

Short answer

Pseudogout risk is associated with ageing joints, calcium pyrophosphate crystal buildup, previous joint problems, and some medical conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Also called
Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, or CPPD
Common clue
A sudden hot, swollen, painful joint
Diagnosis
May require examination and joint-fluid testing

What the risk factors mean

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, happens when calcium pyrophosphate crystals collect in a joint and provoke inflammation. Risk tends to rise with age because cartilage and joint tissues change over time. A history of osteoarthritis, an earlier joint injury, or previous crystal arthritis can also make an attack more likely. Certain metabolic conditions, including problems affecting mineral balance, may be relevant. These factors increase susceptibility; they do not prove that a painful joint is pseudogout.

The knee is often involved, but the wrist, shoulder, ankle, elbow, or another joint can be affected. A clinician may need to distinguish pseudogout from infection, gout, or an injury.

What you can do

Record when swelling began, which joint is affected, recent illness or injury, and medicines or supplements you take. During a flare, rest the joint and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if that feels comfortable. Do not start or stop anti-inflammatory treatment without checking whether it is suitable for your stomach, kidneys, heart, and other medicines.

A clinician may examine the joint and, when needed, use joint aspiration to test fluid and relieve pressure. Treatment options can include anti-inflammatory medication or a cortisone injection, depending on the diagnosis and your health.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot, very swollen joint with fever, chills, feeling faint, or rapidly worsening pain. Infection can look similar to a crystal flare and needs prompt treatment. Arrange an appointment for a first episode, repeated attacks, unexplained swelling, or symptoms that are not settling.

Questions for your doctor

Could another condition explain this swelling? Do I have any medical factors that raise my risk? Would testing joint fluid clarify the diagnosis? Which pain medicines are safe with my current conditions and prescriptions?

Questions people ask

Does having a risk factor mean I will develop pseudogout?

No. Risk factors increase susceptibility but cannot diagnose an attack or predict exactly when one will occur.

Can pseudogout be prevented?

There is no reliable way to remove crystal deposits at home, but managing relevant health conditions and obtaining a clear diagnosis can help guide future care.
