What should you know about pseudogout locations?

Calcium pyrophosphate crystals can deposit in cartilage and around joints. The knee is a frequent site, but a wrist or shoulder flare can be just as painful and limiting. An attack often affects one joint at a time, although more than one area can become inflamed. The affected joint may become swollen, warm, tender and difficult to move.

Location helps guide the examination and imaging, but it does not establish the diagnosis by itself. A painful swollen joint can also result from infection, injury, osteoarthritis or another crystal condition. The pattern, speed of onset and test findings are considered together.

Note exactly which joint became painful, when the change began, whether the area is hot, and whether similar attacks involved another joint. Protect the joint from heavy loading while keeping it gently comfortable if movement is possible. A clinician may recommend anti-inflammatory medication, joint aspiration or a cortisone injection after considering the diagnosis and your other health conditions.

Seek urgent care for any rapidly swollen, hot joint with fever, chills, severe illness, a wound nearby or inability to use the limb. The location does not make infection safe to ignore. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when pain follows an injury or when swelling is worsening quickly.
