What should you know about pseudo acanthosis nigricans?

The neck, underarms, groin, or other skin folds may look darker, feel thicker, and develop a velvety or rough surface. Friction from clothing or skin-to-skin contact, trapped sweat, irritation, and surface buildup can contribute. A dark patch is a symptom, not a diagnosis: true acanthosis nigricans has different associations, so an examination is useful when the change is new, spreading, or persistent.

Clean folds gently, dry them carefully, choose breathable clothing, and reduce rubbing where possible. Avoid bleaching products, forceful scrubbing, and unprescribed steroid mixtures, which can irritate or thin the skin. A dermatologist may recommend a topical retinoid, a carefully selected peel, or laser toning after confirming the cause and considering your tendency to develop darker marks after inflammation.

Arrange an assessment if the pigmentation appeared suddenly, is spreading, involves several folds, becomes itchy or painful, or does not improve after reducing friction. Seek earlier review if there are other new symptoms or if the skin change is accompanied by a concerning systemic change.
