What should you know about a PSA profile test?

PSA is a substance made by prostate cells. The result is considered alongside your age, prostate size, symptoms, family history, medicines, and earlier results. A raised result can occur with prostate enlargement, inflammation, infection, recent procedures, or cancer, so the test alone cannot identify the cause.

A profile may include the total PSA and, when useful, additional measurements that help a clinician interpret the pattern. Trends over time can be more informative than one isolated reading, particularly when tests use the same laboratory method.

Tell the clinician about urinary symptoms, fever, recent ejaculation, cycling, catheter use, prostate procedures, and medicines such as finasteride. They may advise timing the blood test around these factors. Keep a record of prior results and ask whether a repeat PSA, examination, urine testing, MRI Scan, or another assessment is appropriate.

Do not change prescribed medicines without advice. A repeat result may be compared with the earlier value, while a persistently concerning pattern can lead to specialist review.

Arrange prompt medical care for inability to pass urine, blood in the urine, fever with urinary symptoms, or severe pelvic pain. These problems can need attention even when the PSA result is not yet available. Contact the clinician who ordered the test if you are unsure how quickly to discuss a result or if symptoms are worsening.
