PSA ELISA test: what to know

Equipment and setting used in PSA Test

Short answer

A PSA ELISA test measures prostate-specific antigen in blood, while the result still needs clinical interpretation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What ELISA describes

ELISA is a laboratory technique that uses antibodies to detect and measure a target substance. In this setting, the target is prostate-specific antigen in a blood sample. The method describes how the laboratory measures PSA; it does not turn PSA into a stand-alone cancer diagnosis.

The report should be read with the laboratory’s units and reference information, symptoms, examination, medicines, and previous results. If further assessment is needed, a clinician may discuss the [PSA Test](/treatments/cancer-screening/psa-test/) and other investigations.

What to do with the report

Check that the report belongs to you and ask the ordering clinician to explain the result in context. Mention infection, inflammation, urinary symptoms, catheterisation, or recent prostate procedures, because these may affect PSA.

Do not compare an ELISA result with an unrelated laboratory method without professional guidance. If the finding remains concerning, follow-up may include repeat blood testing, examination, or [MRI Scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/mri-scan/) before decisions about biopsy.

When to seek care

Arrange review for an unexpected result or persistent urinary symptoms. Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, or if urinary symptoms come with fever, chills, or feeling seriously unwell.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the ELISA result means in your laboratory’s report, whether another sample is needed, and which symptoms or findings would change the plan. Ask why MRI or biopsy is being considered before agreeing to the next investigation.

Questions people ask

Is ELISA a different substance from PSA?

No. ELISA is the measurement method; PSA is the substance being measured.

Can an ELISA result diagnose prostate cancer?

No. The result must be combined with clinical assessment and, when appropriate, further testing.
