What should you know about prune pit colonoscopy?

A prune pit is a hard, non-food object. If it was swallowed, a clinician may first ask when it happened, whether it was swallowed whole, and whether there is pain, vomiting, choking, trouble swallowing, or a change in bowel movements. Imaging or observation may be considered before an endoscopic test, because not every object is easy to see on every scan.

A colonoscopy uses a flexible camera to inspect the large bowel. It may be considered when a specialist needs to examine the colon or remove an object that has reached it, but bowel preparation and the procedure itself must be weighed against the clinical situation. A bowel symptom does not by itself establish Bowel Cancer.

Contact a medical service promptly for personalised advice rather than trying to make yourself vomit or using laxatives to force passage. Tell the clinician about the object, the approximate time, any existing bowel condition, and medicines that affect bleeding. Keep the wording of the concern clear: a suspected swallowed pit is different from a planned screening colonoscopy.

Seek urgent care for choking, difficulty breathing, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, black or bloody stool, fever, fainting, or marked weakness. These warning signs need assessment because they can indicate obstruction, injury, bleeding, or another acute problem.
