What should you know about proton beam radiotherapy?

A treatment team first maps the tumour and nearby organs with imaging. A planning system shapes the beam so its energy is released inside the intended treatment area. This physical pattern can be useful when sensitive tissue lies close to the target, although suitability depends on the tumour, its position, movement, and the treatment aim.

During each session, you lie in a carefully made position while the machine directs the beam from planned angles. The radiation itself cannot be felt. Some people develop tiredness or skin changes in the treated area; effects depend on the body region and whether other treatments are given.

Bring your medication list and tell the team about implanted devices, previous radiotherapy, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and difficulty lying still. Planning may include a mould, mask, or breathing instructions. Keep appointments for imaging and review because the plan may need adjustment if your anatomy or breathing pattern changes.

Ask how to protect the treated skin, whether you may use creams, and which activities are suitable between sessions. Do not apply products to the treatment area unless the team recommends them.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening pain, a new or spreading skin reaction, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, or unusual weakness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or sudden weakness. The relevant warning signs can vary with the treated body region.

Ask why proton treatment is being considered for your target, which nearby organs the plan is designed to protect, what other treatments might be combined with it, how positioning and movement will be managed, and which symptoms should be reported the same day.
