Short answer

Progesterone may make some people feel sleepy or low in energy, but persistent fatigue needs assessment for other possible causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How progesterone may affect energy

Progesterone can influence the brain and sleep–wake pattern, so some people notice drowsiness, reduced alertness or lower energy after a dose or during hormonal changes. The timing matters: fatigue that repeatedly follows treatment may be relevant, while tiredness that continues throughout the day may have several contributors.

Anaemia, dehydration, infection, coeliac disease, kidney disease, burnout and sleep problems can also cause fatigue. Alcohol use and mood symptoms may affect energy as well. Fatigue alone cannot identify one particular condition.

Track and support your energy

Keep a brief record of dose timing, sleep quality, meals, fluids, activity and when fatigue is strongest. Take progesterone exactly as prescribed, and ask the prescriber whether the timing or formulation is suitable if drowsiness affects work, driving or caregiving. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel unusually sleepy.

Support regular sleep, drink enough for your needs, eat balanced meals and use gentle activity if tolerated. Arrange a GP review if fatigue lasts, interferes with daily life, or comes with other symptoms; a clinician can review medicines and decide whether examination or blood tests are needed.

When to seek prompt help

Seek urgent care for sudden severe weakness, confusion, fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, new one-sided weakness or difficulty speaking. Arrange prompt assessment for fatigue with black stools, significant bleeding, persistent fever, marked thirst and urination, or worsening swelling. These features need attention beyond a routine progesterone review.

Useful questions

Could the timing or dose of progesterone explain my drowsiness? Which other medicines or health problems should we check? Do I need testing for anaemia, thyroid or kidney problems? Is it safe for me to drive while I feel this tired?
