What should you know about professional gait analysis?

Short answer
Professional gait analysis examines how you walk or run so movement findings can guide personalised rehabilitation and equipment choices.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Professional gait analysis examines how you walk or run so movement findings can guide personalised rehabilitation and equipment choices. An assessor combines observation, physical examination and, where useful, measurements from sensors or scanning equipment.
What the assessment shows
The review may consider stride, foot contact, joint motion, balance, symmetry and how the trunk and arms contribute to movement. You may be asked to walk at different speeds or use a treadmill. Three-dimensional motion capture can record joint movement, while a pressure plate gait scanner can show how force is distributed under the feet.
A measurement is not a diagnosis on its own. The clinician interprets findings alongside pain, strength, flexibility, footwear, activity goals and medical history. The same pattern can be harmless in one person and relevant in another when it is linked with symptoms or loss of function.
Preparing and using the results
Wear comfortable clothing and bring the shoes you use for the activity being assessed. Describe when symptoms appear, including whether they occur during walking, running, stairs or standing. The clinician may recommend exercises, changes in training load, footwear adjustments or custom orthotics when foot support is part of the solution.
Use the findings as a starting point for a plan rather than chasing a perfect-looking pattern. Follow-up can check whether pain, confidence, endurance or movement control has changed in daily life.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden inability to walk, new one-sided weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe swelling after injury or a foot that becomes cold or changes colour. A gait assessment is suited to planned evaluation; urgent symptoms need medical triage first.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what question the analysis is intended to answer, which measurements will be collected and how they relate to your symptoms. Clarify whether you need physiotherapy, a footwear change or custom orthotics, and how you will know whether the recommended plan is helping.
