Products for dandruff: what to know

Dandruff causes visible scalp flaking, and some people also notice an itchy scalp. Products may reduce excess scale, oil, or the growth of scalp yeast that contributes to symptoms. Seborrheic dermatitis can cause more persistent flaking with redness or greasy scale and may affect the eyebrows, ears, beard area, or sides of the nose. A dry scalp is not the only explanation for a flaky scalp, so repeated symptoms deserve attention.

Choose a medicated shampoo suited to your symptoms and follow its label or clinician's instructions. Work it into the scalp rather than only the hair, allow the recommended contact time, and rinse thoroughly. A medicated shampoo treatment may need regular use even after visible flakes settle. If scale is stubborn, a topical antifungal treatment may be considered. Avoid scratching, very hot water, heavy fragranced products, and oiling the scalp if these worsen symptoms. Stop a product that causes marked burning, swelling, or a new rash.

See a dermatologist if flaking continues despite correct product use, returns quickly, or comes with thick plaques, significant redness, sores, hair loss, or pain. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, pus, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash.
