What should you know about procedures for stretch marks?

Stretch marks, also called striae, are bands formed when deeper skin layers stretch and the supporting structure remodels. Early marks may look pink, red, purple, or darker than nearby skin; older marks often become paler and slightly indented. They can occur after growth, pregnancy, muscle gain, or weight change.

Microneedling and RF microneedling create controlled microscopic injuries that stimulate remodelling. Fractional laser treatment targets small columns of skin to improve texture and colour. Carboxytherapy places carbon dioxide into the treated area. These approaches may need a planned course and healing time, and results vary.

Have the marks examined before treatment, especially if they appeared suddenly or after using steroid medicines. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, a tendency to form raised scars, active skin disease, tanning, and medicines that affect healing. Ask about test spots, pigment-change risk, sun protection, aftercare, and the time needed before judging the result.

Seek medical advice for rapidly appearing widespread marks, unusual bruising, easy weakness, or other body changes. After treatment, report increasing pain, blistering, pus, spreading redness, fever, or a healing reaction that is not settling. Do not pick peeling or crusted skin, because this can worsen colour and scarring.
