What should you know about primary pulmonary hypertension?

The pulmonary arteries carry blood from the heart to the lungs. In this condition, these vessels become narrowed or stiff, so the right side of the heart must pump against greater resistance. Breathlessness with activity, tiredness, dizziness, fainting, chest pressure and ankle swelling can occur. The word primary means that clinicians have not found another condition or medicine explaining the raised lung-artery pressure; it does not describe the severity by itself.

Arrange assessment with a clinician experienced in pulmonary vascular disease. Testing may include an ECG, echocardiogram, breathing tests, imaging and blood tests, followed by a catheter-based pressure measurement when needed. Treatment is individualised and may include medicines that relax or widen lung blood vessels, oxygen in selected situations and support for activity planning. Take prescribed treatment consistently, report new swelling or reduced exercise ability, and ask before starting supplements or pregnancy planning.

Seek urgent help for sudden or severe breathlessness, fainting, new chest pain, blue lips, confusion or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact your specialist promptly if ordinary activity becomes harder, you gain fluid weight quickly or your heart symptoms change. Do not stop pulmonary hypertension medicine without medical advice.

Ask which tests confirmed the pressure problem, what secondary causes were checked, how treatment will be monitored and which activities are appropriate. Discuss travel, altitude, pregnancy, vaccinations and the symptoms that should trigger an urgent call.
