What should you know about primary dermal melanoma?

Melanoma begins in pigment-producing cells. In primary dermal melanoma, the tumour is centred in the dermis, the skin layer beneath the surface. A lump or nodule may be skin-coloured, brown, black, blue, or mixed in appearance, and it may be mistaken for a benign growth. The diagnosis depends on examination, biopsy findings, and assessment for melanoma elsewhere, because a dermal deposit can sometimes represent spread from another site.

A specialist team may review the pathology and examine nearby lymph nodes. Staging can involve imaging and, in selected cases, a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy. The result guides the discussion rather than predicting one identical course for every person.

Arrange prompt review of a new, changing, firm, pigmented, bleeding, or persistent skin lump. Do not pick or repeatedly injure it; note its location and photograph it for comparison. If melanoma is confirmed, treatment may involve Surgical Excision or other Skin Cancer Surgery, with the plan shaped by the lesion and staging. Some people may discuss Immunotherapy. Follow-up after treatment helps clinicians check the treated area, lymph nodes, and overall skin.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a rapidly enlarging lesion, uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, new weakness, confusion, seizure, or a severe headache. Contact the treating team promptly for a new lump near the original site, persistent swollen nodes, or unexplained symptoms after diagnosis. A changing skin lesion should be assessed even when it is not painful.
