What should you know about primary cough headache?

The pain often starts abruptly during the trigger and may feel sharp, pressing, or explosive around the back of the head. It can settle quickly, although some people have a dull ache afterwards. A primary cough headache is diagnosed only after a clinician has considered other causes. Headache linked with a cold, blocked nose, or sinus irritation may instead reflect an underlying illness such as Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis, or Chronic Sinusitis. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can also contribute to head pain, especially after sweating or being outdoors.

Arrange a medical review if this is your first cough-triggered headache, if attacks are recurring, or if the pattern is changing. Record what triggers it, how quickly it begins, where it hurts, how long it lasts, and whether nausea, visual change, fever, or neck stiffness occurs. Drink fluids, rest, and treat a cough as advised by a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid forceful straining until you have been assessed, and do not repeatedly self-medicate for unexplained new head pain.

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache unlike previous headaches, or for headache with fainting, confusion, weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, seizure, repeated vomiting, fever with a stiff neck, or new vision loss. Get prompt assessment if the pain follows a head injury, occurs with significant fever, or keeps worsening. These warning signs need evaluation because a cough-triggered headache can occasionally resemble pain from a more serious problem.
