What Should You Know About Preventing Burn Scars?

Short answer

Prompt cooling and careful wound care can support healing and may reduce the chance of a more noticeable burn scar.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early priority
Cool the burn with cool running water and cover it gently.
Avoid
Ice, butter, oils, harsh antiseptics, picking and popping blisters.
After closure
Protect healed skin from sunlight and ask about tailored scar care.

The short answer

Scar formation depends on how deep the burn is, where it is located, how long the skin takes to close, and your individual healing response. Prevention starts with treating the injury safely rather than trying to remove damaged skin at home.

What burn-scar prevention involves

A burn scar develops as injured skin repairs itself. Deeper burns and wounds that remain open or become infected are more likely to heal with raised, tight or differently coloured skin. A scar can also restrict movement when it crosses a joint, the hand, the face or another area that needs to stretch.

The safest early response is to cool the burn with cool running water, remove jewellery or tight clothing near the area if it is not stuck, and cover the injury loosely with a clean, non-fluffy dressing. Cooling should not involve ice, butter, oils or harsh antiseptics, which can further irritate injured skin.

What to do while the burn heals

Keep the wound clean and follow the dressing instructions given by a clinician. Do not peel away stuck fabric, break blisters, or pick at a healing surface. Seek advice about dressings if the area is large, deep, very painful, or difficult to keep covered.

After the skin has fully closed, protect it from sunlight with clothing or a broad-spectrum sunscreen suited to healed skin. Sun exposure can make new scar colour changes more noticeable. Once healing is complete, a clinician may discuss silicone-based care, massage or other scar management; do not massage an open, bleeding or infected wound.

If a scar remains raised, itchy, tight or discoloured, treatment options can include Fractional Laser Treatment, Scar Revision Surgery or, for selected injuries, a Skin Graft. Suitability depends on the wound and the stage of healing.

When to seek medical care

Get urgent medical help for burns involving the face, eyes, hands, feet, genitals or a major joint; burns that wrap around a limb; electrical or chemical burns; or skin that looks white, charred, leathery or deeply numb. Medical assessment is also appropriate when the burn is extensive or the cause is uncertain.

During healing, contact a clinician if pain, redness, swelling, warmth, drainage or fever is increasing, or if the wound is not closing. Early assessment can support wound care and movement, which may influence the final scar.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which dressing is appropriate, whether the burn needs review, when it is safe to start scar care, and how to protect movement if the injury is near a joint. You can also ask which changes should prompt a same-day call.

Questions people ask

Can every burn scar be prevented?

No. The depth and location of the injury and the way your skin heals affect scarring, but safe first aid and appropriate wound care may improve healing.

Should I put ice on a burn to prevent a scar?

No. Ice can injure already damaged skin. Use cool running water, then cover the area loosely and seek medical advice when the burn is serious or uncertain.

When can scar treatment start?

Scar care should be chosen after the wound has closed and a clinician has confirmed that the skin is ready; open or infected skin needs wound treatment first.
