Can you prevent syringomas?

Syringomas are small, firm, skin-coloured or slightly yellow bumps formed from sweat ducts. They often occur in groups around the lower eyelids, although other areas can be affected. They are benign and are not a sign that the skin is dirty or that a product has blocked the pores. Because several conditions can look like skin bumps, a clinician should confirm the diagnosis when a growth is new, unusual, or changing.

Use gentle cleansing and avoid picking, squeezing, scraping, or applying harsh acids near the eyes. These steps will not remove a syringoma and may cause inflammation, infection, or pigment change. If the bumps are stable but bothersome cosmetically, discuss the expected appearance, healing time, and possibility of recurrence before treatment. Options may include CO2 laser resurfacing or electrosurgery, selected according to the site, skin type, and number of lesions.

Book a dermatology assessment if a bump bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful, changes quickly, or differs from the others. Seek prompt care for swelling around the eye, vision changes, or signs of infection after an attempted procedure. A diagnosis is especially useful before treating any bump close to the eyelid margin.
