Can a device help prevent snoring?

Short answer
A suitable anti-snoring device may help by widening the airway, but it should follow an assessment of the snoring’s cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Some devices help hold the upper airway open
- Safety check
- Review fit, dental health and breathing pauses first
How these devices differ
Some devices support the jaw or tongue so the upper airway stays more open during sleep. Others aim to improve nasal airflow. Fit, comfort, dental health and the reason for snoring all affect whether a device is appropriate. Store-bought products may not suit your mouth or airway, and a device that reduces sound does not necessarily treat obstructive sleep apnoea. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis may need a different approach.
Using a device safely
Before buying one, describe your snoring, nasal symptoms and sleep quality to a clinician or dental professional experienced with sleep-related devices. Ask about jaw pain, tooth movement, dry mouth and cleaning. Stop using it and seek advice if it causes persistent pain, bleeding or a change in your bite. Combine device advice with side-sleeping, avoiding alcohol near bedtime and treating nasal congestion. If weight is a factor, a clinician can discuss a [Weight Management Programme](/treatments/lifestyle-and-wellness/weight-management-programme/).
When a device is not enough
Seek assessment if someone notices breathing pauses, choking or gasping, or if you have marked daytime sleepiness, morning headaches or difficulty concentrating. These features can occur with [Obstructive Sleep Apnoea](/conditions/obstructive-sleep-apnoea/), which needs more than noise reduction. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake or chest pain. See [Snoring](/symptoms/snoring/) for symptom context.
Questions for your doctor
Is my snoring likely to come from nasal blockage, jaw position or sleep apnoea? Which type of device fits my dental and airway needs? Should I have a sleep assessment before using one?

Questions people ask
Can any anti-snoring device treat sleep apnoea?
No. Device choice depends on the diagnosis, and sound reduction does not show that airway obstruction has been treated.
What if the device hurts my jaw?
Stop using it and contact the clinician who fitted or recommended it. Persistent jaw pain or bite changes need review.
