How can you prevent skin tags?

Short answer
You cannot reliably prevent every skin tag, but reducing friction and checking new or changing growths can protect your skin.

What skin tags mean
Skin tags are soft, usually flesh-coloured growths that often appear where skin or clothing rubs, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin, or beneath the breasts. They are commonly harmless, but a new bump is not automatically a skin tag. A clinician can distinguish it from a wart, mole, or another lesion, especially if it is firm, dark, painful, bleeding, or rapidly changing.
Ways to reduce irritation
Keep folds dry, choose clothing that does not repeatedly catch on a growth, and avoid necklaces or straps that rub the same area. Do not cut, tie off, burn, or use an over-the-counter remover on a suspected tag; these actions can cause bleeding, infection, or a scar and may delay diagnosis. If a confirmed tag catches on clothing or affects your vision, a dermatology clinician can discuss removal options such as cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or skin tag removal.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination for a growth that changes colour or shape, grows quickly, becomes painful, bleeds without clear rubbing, or does not resemble your other skin tags. Seek prompt care for persistent bleeding, spreading redness, warmth, pus, or fever after an injury or attempted removal.
Questions for your doctor
Could this growth be a skin tag or something else? Is observation reasonable? If removal is suitable, which method fits its location, size, and attachment? What wound care and warning signs should I follow afterward?

Questions people ask
Can friction cause skin tags?
Repeated rubbing may contribute to tags in skin folds, although avoiding friction cannot prevent every tag.
Should I remove a skin tag myself?
No. Self-removal can bleed, become infected, scar, or remove a growth that has not been correctly identified.
