What mastitis means
Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue that may cause a tender, swollen, warm or reddened area. It can happen when milk is not draining comfortably, but it is not a sign that breastfeeding has failed. Nipple damage, an unsettled latch, sudden changes in feeding, tight clothing or strong pressure can contribute.
Steps that may help
Offer feeds according to your baby's cues and let the baby finish naturally; do not try to empty the breast aggressively. Check that the mouth takes in a deep, comfortable latch, vary feeding positions, and use gentle hand expression only when needed for comfort. Rest, drink to thirst, and choose a supportive bra that does not dig into breast tissue. A lactation consultation can help correct latch or pumping difficulties.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if breast pain, redness, swelling or a hard area is worsening, if you feel feverish or unwell, or if symptoms do not begin settling with simple measures. Seek urgent help for severe illness, confusion, breathing difficulty or a rapidly spreading red area. Keep feeding or expressing gently unless a clinician advises otherwise.
Questions to ask
Could my latch, pump settings or feeding pattern be irritating the breast? How should I manage a recurring tender area? Which symptoms mean I need an examination or treatment?

Questions people ask
Should I stop breastfeeding to prevent mastitis?
Usually, gentle continued feeding is compatible with care, but get individual advice if you are very unwell or have a complication.
Can a blocked area be massaged firmly?
Firm or deep massage can irritate tissue; use gentle touch and seek lactation support for persistent blockage.
