Short answer

You can help prevent bursitis by reducing repeated pressure, warming up, increasing activity gradually, using supportive movement technique and treating early irritation before it becomes persistent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Reduce pressure
Pad kneeling tasks and avoid leaning directly on a tender joint.
Watch for
Warmth, spreading redness, fever or drainage require prompt attention.

Why a bursa becomes irritated

A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that helps tissues glide near a joint. Repeated kneeling, leaning on an elbow, overhead work, running changes or direct impact can irritate it. Bursitis may cause local tenderness, warmth, swelling and pain with pressure or movement. Joint Swelling can have other causes, so location and associated symptoms matter.

Skin breaks, fever or rapidly increasing redness raise concern for infection and need prompt assessment. A clinician may distinguish bursitis from tendon, joint or bone problems by examining movement and the tender area.

Daily prevention measures

Use padding for kneeling tasks, avoid resting your weight on an elbow, and adjust work height so the joint is not held under repeated pressure. Alternate demanding activities, warm up before sport and increase training load in manageable steps. Choose technique and equipment that keep the joint aligned and stop when pain is escalating rather than pushing through it.

Early soreness often improves when the aggravating task is modified while comfortable movement continues. If symptoms persist, a clinician may consider Anti-Inflammatory Medication, Cortisone Injection or Joint Aspiration depending on the suspected cause; these are treatment decisions, not routine prevention.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for persistent swelling, repeated episodes, restricted movement, significant warmth or pain that interferes with sleep. Get urgent care for fever, spreading redness, drainage, severe sudden pain or inability to use the joint.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which activity is irritating the bursa, how to modify it, whether infection or another joint problem needs exclusion, and which treatment is suitable if swelling continues.

Questions people ask

Does every swollen joint have bursitis?
