Why pregnancy can cause reflux
Pregnancy hormones can relax the valve between the food pipe and stomach, while the growing uterus can increase pressure inside the abdomen. Acid may then move upwards, causing burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, burping, or nausea. Symptoms may be more noticeable after a large meal or when lying down. Acid reflux can also disturb sleep or irritate the throat and contribute to a cough. Chest tightness or severe abdominal pain should not automatically be attributed to reflux.
Ways to reduce symptoms
Try smaller meals more often, eat slowly, and stay upright after food rather than lying down soon afterwards. Notice and limit personal triggers such as rich, spicy, acidic, or caffeinated foods if they worsen symptoms. Avoid tight clothing around the abdomen and raise your upper body for sleep using a safe arrangement. Ask your obstetric or primary-care clinician before taking an antacid, alginate, or acid-suppressing medicine; some products are unsuitable in pregnancy or may interact with supplements. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for chest pressure with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, dehydration, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Arrange a routine review when reflux regularly disrupts sleep, eating, or daily activities despite lifestyle changes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which foods and medicines are suitable for your stage of pregnancy, how to separate antacids from prenatal supplements, and whether your symptoms need another explanation. Mention your gestational stage, current medicines, vomiting, swallowing changes, and sleep disruption.
