What should you know about pressure plate gait analysis?

Short answer
Pressure plate gait analysis measures how your feet contact and load a sensor surface during walking or running, helping guide a broader movement assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test shows
A pressure plate contains sensors that record loading under different parts of the foot as you take steps. The clinician may review contact timing, balance between the feet, pressure distribution, and how the pattern changes with speed, footwear, or a task. The test is a measurement tool, not a diagnosis by itself. Foot shape, pain, strength, coordination, shoes, and walking habits can all influence the result.
The assessment may be combined with a physical examination, video, or [3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/). A [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) can display data for discussion, but treatment decisions should match your symptoms and examination findings.
Before and during testing
Bring the shoes you normally use and wear comfortable clothing that allows the clinician to observe your movement. Tell them where you feel pain, when it appears, whether you use inserts, and what activities you want to return to. You may walk barefoot or in shoes and repeat a short route several times. Try to walk naturally rather than changing your steps to produce a particular pattern.
Afterward, ask which finding is clinically meaningful, whether it changes your exercise plan, and how progress will be checked. In some cases, the findings support discussion of [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/), but an insert is not automatically needed.
When the test is not the priority
Tell the clinician if walking causes sudden severe pain, a new inability to bear weight, repeated giving way, or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek urgent assessment for a cold or pale foot, new major weakness, loss of sensation, or severe pain after an injury. Pressure testing should be postponed when you are acutely unwell or cannot walk safely until the underlying problem is reviewed.
Questions to ask
What question is this analysis intended to answer? Will you assess me barefoot, in my usual shoes, or both? Which findings relate to my symptoms? Could pain be changing my walking pattern? Would exercise, footwear changes, or orthotics be considered, and how will we review the result?

Questions people ask
Is pressure plate gait analysis painful?
The measurement itself involves walking across a sensor surface, but walking may be uncomfortable if you already have a painful condition.
Does an unusual pressure pattern mean I need orthotics?
Not automatically. The pattern must be interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, shoes, and goals.
