Preserved heart failure: what to know

This form of heart failure is often called heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Pressure can build in the heart and lungs even though pumping measurements look near normal. Breathlessness with activity, tiredness, ankle swelling, cough when lying down and reduced exercise tolerance can occur. High blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, kidney disease and excess weight can contribute, but the diagnosis needs assessment rather than symptoms alone.

Attend regular reviews so blood pressure, heart rhythm, kidney function, medicines and fluid symptoms can be checked. Take prescribed treatment consistently and discuss troublesome effects before stopping it. Gentle activity suited to your ability, less salty processed food, avoiding smoking and keeping vaccinations current may support overall heart health. Record changes in breathlessness, swelling, weight and ability to do usual tasks so your clinician can see a pattern.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips or sudden weakness. Seek urgent medical advice for rapidly worsening swelling, a new irregular pounding heartbeat, or breathlessness that prevents lying flat. A sudden change can reflect fluid build-up, a rhythm problem or another urgent illness.
